Drive north on I-85 toward Atlanta, then use Exit 38 to reach the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site. The National Park Service directs drivers to turn right at the stop sign, travel half a mile, then turn left onto Chappie James Avenue and follow signs to the parking area.

Parking for the site is at the overlook area. If you’re setting up a broader history-focused day in Montgomery before or after the drive, the one-day route from downtown to Old Alabama Town covers another way to plan time in the city.

Which Tuskegee history stops should you choose?

Tuskegee’s history stops focus on different parts of the area’s story, so choose based on what you want to see and the hours you can work with.

Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site

Start at Hangar 1 Museum, which houses the visitor center, an orientation room, a four-minute introductory video, park brochures and a Junior Ranger booklet. The National Park Service describes exhibits and films about the Tuskegee Airmen, as well as ranger-led tours to various buildings at the site.

Tuskegee History Center

At 104 South Elm Street, the Tuskegee History Center is a museum and the official visitor center for Macon County and the city of Tuskegee. Admission is free, donations are welcome, and free on-site parking is available, including for motorcoaches and RVs. Personal-use still photography is permitted, though some restrictions may apply; video is prohibited inside the museum.

Tuskegee University’s Legacy Museum and campus

The Legacy Museum is at the campus entrance, at 1200 W. Montgomery Road. Its directions say to continue down BTW Boulevard to the four-way stop, where the museum is on the left. The university also identifies the George Washington Carver Museum and The Oaks, Booker T. Washington’s home, among its campus visitor destinations.

Hangars 1 and 2 at the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site are open Monday through Saturday, 9:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m. CST.

The grounds, trails, roads and parking areas are open daily from sunrise to sunset unless an area is closed for a designated reason, including an emergency or a construction or safety hazard. The site is closed Sundays, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

The Legacy Museum allows walk-in visits from 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, except during official university holidays. Groups of 20 or more should arrange an appointment in advance.

Admission is free, with a suggested donation of $5 per visitor. Visitors must follow campus security protocols and obtain a pass at the Public Safety Office, across from the main entrance at 1103 W. Montgomery Road.

The Tuskegee History Center’s schedule can vary, and the Legacy Museum’s hours follow the university calendar. For current access and hours, check the official site before you go.

Allow time for the return drive

Allow time for the return drive

Plan the return to Montgomery around the closing time of your last stop, especially if you visit a museum with weekday hours. The National Historic Site’s grounds close at sunset, while its hangars have set daytime hours, so decide in advance whether you’re prioritizing the museum buildings or the outdoor site.

If you’re extending your Alabama history itinerary on another day, the Montgomery-to-Selma day trip offers a separate route to plan from the city.
